Spania: safety measures and relocation of the footpath
In recent years, the Spania area in Vaduz has repeatedly experienced landslide events and subsequently a landslide. Parallel to the immediate measures to protect the properties located there, permanent protection measures were developed on behalf of the Office for Civil Protection. These provide for a debris retention area, which also serves as protection against landslides. The municipality of Vaduz will relocate the footpath from Spania to the cemetery as well as the utility lines. As part of these measures, Liechtenstein Wärme will implement the district heating expansion in this area. The corresponding work is scheduled to start at the end of September 2024 and be completed in spring 2025.
The aim of the planned, permanent protective measures in the Spania area is to ensure appropriate safety against a 300-year event.
Specifically, the Office for Civil Protection is planning the following work:
- A debris retention chamber with a volume of 1,000m3 and an embankment height of up to five meters to protect against landslides and debris flows as well as surface runoff
- Underground sedimentation shaft with a volume of 30m3 to drain water into the pipe system
- Rockfall protection dam for the footpath
The municipality of Vaduz is carrying out the following measures as part of this work:
- Relocation of the footpath from Spania to the cemetery, as this is currently in the danger zone
- Relocation of the municipal utility lines
Liechtenstein Wärme will implement the district heating expansion in this area.
The work is scheduled to run from the end of September 2024 to spring 2025. During this time, the footpath from Spania to the cemetery will be completely closed!
